This Bed We Made

It’s been a hot minute. I’ve spent most of this year exclusively playing Baldur’s Gate 3 for the first time, really trying to get into every last little nook and cranny. Guess what? I’ve still missed SO MUCH. But anyway, this post isn’t about BG3, it’s about This Bed We Made! A funky little murder…

A funky little murder mystery, it felt very short I will say. I don’t really know if I did well? Or if I did incredibly poorly or if I even figured anything out! I do read a lot of murder mysteries however, when it comes to games I kind of have the memory of a sieve for some reason so potentially the whole thing is on me. It’s a very short game I thought and defo could have been fleshed out into something a tad longer.

I did enjoy it, but I also had no idea what I was doing. If you want to read spoilers take a look below the image, but the game does tell you that throwing or not throwing away items will have consequences although it doesn’t seem like everything did? I had played this in two sittings so maybe next time I play it I’ll do it in one big bash and see if that makes a difference. Anyway onto spoilies!

So the murder comes right at the very end and it’s Mr Cruz. There are 3 obvious potential culprits and I did manage to land all three of them in prison rip. I think I uncovered most of the evidence I could have, including getting into the locked box in Anne’s room, decoding the notes between Marcella and Anne, finding all of Mr Spade/Paul’s photos and letters to Marcella and I’m STILL confused. It’s obvious that Anne and Marcella were in love, Paul was empowered by Marcella’s books under her psydonym to pursue Lindsay but after he died became a bit too obsessive once Marcella hired him to be a PI for her next book. Further than that, I have no idea. All three of them could potentially be murderers, Anne and Marcella have the most motive but Paul also could be equally as guilty.

The very end felt incredibly rushed through, I wish there was a little more digging from Sophie’s POV after the murder and maybe more clarity? Again this could just be me.

One of the mechanics I found really interesting was the lie dialogue options although some of it did feel completely useless until the interrogation right at the end. The whole game, you don’t interact with that many other characters and you only get to use the lying option with Bernard once during the main portion of the game to protect the caretaker.

I appreciate that the game tried to weave in other staff members’ stories into the main plot as little side sections, although a lot of it felt unfinished and I’m not sure if any of it had any consequences. I would have liked to have seen some more substantial outcomes rather than overheard dialogues behind doors and an achievement pop-up telling me what happened.

I did have fun playing it and I will play it again, I just feel like more could have been done. This game had SO MUCH potential and it didn’t live up to my expectations.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading, let me know your thoughts on the game, I’m dead curious to know if it’s a skill issue.
